At Cypress Hillside School, we teach a Leadership-infused British Curriculum for Primary Schools with the Nigerian Curriculum.

Our Primary School is for children aged 5 to 11, and the National Curriculum for England for Primary children is taught alongside the Nigerian Curriculum as:

  • Key Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2, for children aged 5-6) *
  • Key Stage 2 (Years 3, 4, 5 & 6, for children aged 7-10) *

* the age of the child on 31st August for a September start

The Primary programme we teach offers a broad and balanced curriculum that provides children with many opportunities to develop positive attitudes to learning at the beginning of their schooling.

Our thematic approach to teaching integrates the subjects with a half-termly topic that –helps to engage children and bring the subject to life for them.

Key Stage 1

  • Years 1 & 2
  • For children aged 5-6 (the pupil’s age on 31st August for a September start)

Key Stage 1 provides pupils with a varied and stimulating curricula. Our classrooms are full of activity within an atmosphere that is calm, caring and conducive to learning. We focus on creating a respectful and close rapport between pupils and staff.

English and Mathematics have priority in terms of teaching time and are taught daily within adopted curricula. In Science, History, Geography, Art, Design Technology, ICT, Digital Literacy and Music, children learn about the world in which they live as well as developing their own creativity and physical expression. All subjects are taught by Class Teaching Managers, except Physical Education and Music, which are taught by Specialist Managers.

Pastoral care is given high priority as a Christ based school with strong moral values and pupils are looked after and supported in all aspects of school life. There is always time to listen, talk and help.

Key Stage 2

Cypress Hillside School Lekki

Years 3, 4, 5 & 6
For children aged 7-10 (the pupil’s age on 31st August for a September start)

As pupils move on to Key Stage 2, they are developing an increased independence as learners and their strengths are supported by their teaching managers who ensure a dynamic and rigorous delivery of the curricula, while creating a positive and nurturing environment.

The development of high self-esteem and respect for others are important aspects of the curricula in use and we encourage the children to take more responsibility, both for themselves and for others.

English and Mathematics are the core subjects within the British Curriculum for Primary Schools. They receive priority and are taught daily. Students are also taught Science, Computing, History, Geography, Art, Design Technology, and Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education by the Teaching Managers. Music, Physical Education, and Modern Foreign Languages are taught by Specialist Teachers. The Modern Foreign Languages on offer are French, and Mandarin while the core local languages of our nation are offered.

We enhance the Key Stage 2 curricula with an extensive extra-curricular programme, including the CHS leadership program which help pupils develop values, key skills, and with co-curricular activities, school field trips and many inter-school events and activities.

Assessment

We assess Primary School pupils’ progress continuously through Teacher Assessment. Alongside this, Assessment for Learning ensures the provision of differentiated learning opportunities in line with next-step targets identified by the Class Teaching Manager. Children are assessed against National Curriculum age-related expectations.

Each term, we invite parents to meet their child’s Class Managers to discuss their education and development. Our Class and Specialist Managers write termly report to describe the child’s progress in all subjects.
