Six Steps to Improve E-Learning Outcome at Home

COVID-19 has brought a new normal to the world and we are gradually adapting to this new normal which includes doing most of our activities virtually and electronic learning for our kids is not left out.

One of the biggest mistakes parents can make when it comes to e-learning is for the child not to be interested in the learning platform/device or learning environment. If you are looking for ways to keep your kids engaged and interested in learning outside the classroom, below are six proven ways to make e-learning interesting while greatly improving their learning outcomes:

1. Design a conducive and interesting learning corner: The learning environment of every child is very important as this has a major role to play in the learning outcome of the child. Hence, separating and decorating the learning corner is a good idea so that the child would always find that environment relevant to learning with resources arrangement of all learning materials. Also note that the learning corner should be separate from the play area of the child where toys and other fun materials are arranged, this helps the child to have a mind set of learning anytime he or she is brought there.

2. Have a schedule: The need for schedule will enhance proper preparation per day. Knowing what to do and when to do it is very important for children. Preparation is the key to every success achieved in life. Therefore, preparing for each day to ensure a successful and exciting e-class is achieved as this would make the children to look forward to the next one. Preparation includes waking the kids, taking their bathes and having breakfast early enough. This would help the kids to be balanced and composed for the class.

3. Be part of the kid’s practical class: Help out with the main practical activities that have been taught in class as this would help the child gain firsthand knowledge of what he or she has seen during classes. It would be more interesting and fun if kids practice what they have learnt under the supervision of their parents or guardian

4. Be flexible with non essential choices: Children go through much of their daily routine without a lot of choices. To offer kids the control they desire, it’s important to incorporate choices into their activities and home works or assignments as often as possible. Keep in mind that offering choices is not a method for kids to get out of doing work but an opportunity to empower them to take charge and be responsible. For example, giving a choice of doing homework or playing a game is not a productive choice. However, letting the kids pick the order of homework assignments they will work on may help.

5. Teach organizational skills: When kids are organised, they can stay focused. Teach your older children how to use a calendar or personal planner to help stay organized daily. It’s also helpful to teach your child how to make a to-do list to help prioritize and get things done. It can be as simple as: homeworkindoor games, sleeping time e.t.c.Talk to your child about keeping his or her learning desk orderly so that papers or books that are needed for study don’t get lost. Having folders to keep track of homework and projects could be helpful.

6. Ensure adequate and daily follow up on your child’s learning progress: Ask your child to teach you whatever he/she learned at the end of each day classes. Also, check your child’s assignment book and homework folder at the end of the day so you’re familiar with assignments and your child doesn’t fall behind. Set up a bin for papers that you need to check or sign. Also, keep a special box or bin for completed and graded projects and toss papers that you don’t need to keep. Research shows that children become very intelligent and interested in their studies when they know their parents or guardians are also interested in the progress report of their daily learning.
